The Waterpik WP-100 Ultra Dental Water Jet is clinically proven to be more effective than floss for healthier gums. Most dental professionals recommend brushing and flossing to keep your teeth and gums healthy themselves. Unfortunately, nearly 80 percent of Americans do not thread on a regular basis, most people find flossing to be a painful or unpleasant task. Finally, there is a viable alternative to flossing that feels great and is easy to complete.
Waterpik Ultra goes way beyond flossing to keep their gums healthy. Waterpik has designed the WP-100 to provide a water pressure of 10 to 90 PSI with 1200 pulses per minute. This system offers a clinically proven combination of water pressure and pulsation to remove debris and bacteria lodged deep between teeth and below the gum-line – three times deeper than brushing alone. Moreover, it massages and stimulates gums to improve circulation and help promote strong and healthy gums. Waterpik Ultra is so effective that is clinically proven to be up to 93 percent more effective flossing at reducing gum bleeding – a key indicator of impending gum disease.

I used a Waterpik for several decades, and while the effectiveness of the product – good for oral irrigation and strengthening the gums – has been consistent, design and product quality has slipped. My first Waterpik, acquired in early 1970 for sensitive gums, on the recommendation of my dentist, lasted much longer than my most recent purchases. Sometimes the engine sounds, and sometimes the tube is exhausted.

That said, no product lasts forever. But what really bothers me is the design of the current product. First of all, instead of two “takes,” Waterpik now gives a “pick” and a “tongue cleaner”. And when you try to collect, buy the replacement, you must buy with the tongue cleaner. Furthermore, the design of the current model is too big, not orderly and compact as before. And finally, the only way you can close the Waterpik is removing the pick every time, at first, does not fit on the bottom otherwise.

Bottom Line: It ‘still a good product, but becomes increasingly uncomfortable with each new iteration, and I think the market is ripe for the competition.

Update May 2008: This Waterpik finally went the way of moving all the devices (the cable that connects the implementation broke) and I bought the newer “Ultra” model. Many of the drawbacks of the “staff” of the model have been eliminated in Ultra: The Ultra has a much smaller footprint, the jet is positioned better, and has a top to cover the tank when not in use. Although it is about 50% more than the cost, it’s worth it to me (despite the blue tank, which does not correspond to any of my accessories false ceiling).

Look at the picture carefully. See the bathtub to the top, where the water goes? Is not connected permanently. It ‘just kind of wobbles up there with a gasket around the small hole on the bottom where the water is introduced into the engine. In other words, if you were to remove or hit the bathtub, while in water, it will spill over everything. In addition, you can not leave the water in it and include it in the mouth of the holder or set on your counter for a moment, as you begin to slowly drain the water if it is held above the water level — a syphoning occours effect.

The tube that extends from the nozzle unit is cheap and too short (only 3 m) and is so strongly curled ends barely able to reach 2 meters.

The engine is very strong and sounds like a rusty old boat motor and shakes around my desk. (I learned the approach helps to immobilize a towell, quiet and a bit ‘, which is good, because I’ll have even a towell ready in case I bump into the tank.)

So why use it? Well, because it really works! Once I learned the art of using this half-baked gimmick, I found my mouth, teeth and gums are cleaner than ever. The flow of water puts out is very powerful and “Piks” where brushing and flossing leave out. I would gladly buy a better brand if it existed, but to my knowledge, WaterPik are the only ones to make a car like that. I think that explains why WaterPik cut corners so much to make this thing – no competition! No one else wants to do them.

What a piece of garbage! I had a whole day – just enough time to throw away my receipt of purchase, of course – before the tube extracted from the handle, pull the water around the bathroom. I do not know why the pipe Waterpik expected to remain on the handle first, it seems that it must have been obtained with spit – or prayers – as there is no tape or any type Gromit to secure it. Apparently a “handle replacement kit is available from the manufacturer, and I wondered how I could order one. I suspect Waterpik has a thriving sales activities such as pipe / connection handle is so flimsy, seems sure to fail – in my case, within a day. My advice: save your sales receipt in case you need to return the unit to the store where you purchased, or that require warranty service. Pathetic.

ADDENDUM (written a week later): Well, I was wrong. You DO NOT need to save the receipt, unless you want to return a failed WP-60 for the store. I contacted Waterpik their website, explained the problem – and one week after they sent a completely new unit. I must say, certainly stand behind them (default) product! (Perhaps it is helpful if you remember, as I did, that if the problem of detachment of the tube is enough to justify a common theme on their customer support page, maybe you could engineer a more effective!) Operates the new device ? The tube seems to be more securely attached to the handle, but I’m still using my first copy, as I devised a simple yet effective solution, while Waterpik was making their move, only by wrapping a length of plastic tape around the tube disconnected, you increase the circumference of the pipe enough to make a perfect fit with the collar of white plastic stuck in the handle, where the hose attaches. Then just remove the collar from the handle, slide the collar on the tube now reinforced with tape, put the tube in the handle, and then reinsert the collar so the card is inserted under the edge of the handle. Again, one wonders how Waterpik stay in business solutions designed to make these simple such as (but critical) defects in design, it is as a carmaker giving a brand new car because they had installed defective dice on July one of your wheels. Another design flaw that should not exist on a mature product: the tips of irrigation really gnurled needed an outlet so you can easily turn into the mouth when it gets wet during use. Beyond this, the engine is running (so far), and Waterpik are behind the product. We must also ask, however, what would happen to Waterpik’s market share, if a Japanese company that sweats the details, such as Panasonic decided to make a plug-in oral irrigator …

SECOND ADDENDUM (written a few months later): Grrr – the cleaning tip broke this morning when I tried to remove it from the tube. You will need to keep a spare or two at home, and I understand that Waterpik sells only the tip with a tongue cleaner, which I need. Once again, another mistake in what should now be a mature product
